View Full Version : Hugo fanfilm for christmas

I posted this early, so it won't be too late to begin and finish. I've been considering of making a fan film adaption of Danish audio story book Hugo og det Fortryllede Agern (Hugo and enchanted acorn) for Christmas - of course, I won't do it alone. We need someone who can translate it to English (and someone who can bring pictures about it - if there is any), so we can plan the scripts and storyboards for it. I've installed the Flash animator and learned to use it, but I may need inbetweener animators, as well as rough pencil testers, ink painters, colorists and background illustrators.

The audio book can be listened in YouTube: Part 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jaey8zCaxVs), Part 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yAZy4bvUwEI), Part 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mc68RlZJtYI), Part 4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lKqD83CqkK8)

Only image I managed to find of this story:
http://pics.qxlstatic.dk/12_803000802_Big/diverse/julekalender-med-hugo-i-original-embalege.jpg

On a side note, does anyone have English versions of Hugo Classic 2-4, please? I need specific files from each one in order to get Agent Hugo LA's English version finished.

....or no one here has the english version.

Or even the original version that they can translate. Fortunately I found one from YouTube, who promised to translate. Now I'll just wait till he's done. Then I need the images of the book, so I or someone else could make model sheets for the characters. This also eases up the storyboarding.

It's READYYY! The script for fanfilm adaption of "Hugo and Enchanted acorn":
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ngSeYwRE3gFKAm16JA7TBuUI0EL3JmAyh-D3Zj9ohn8/edit?pli=1

As you can see, I'm open for ideas of what could happen in this fanfilm in blue parts of the script. Volunteers?

Plus, here's the list of movie's characters so far:
- Hugo
- Hugolina
- Trollerit, Trollerat, Trollerut
- Matt the elf (Mads in Danish)
- Scylla
- Misc. troll villagers if necessary
- Santa and misc. elves may be in this movie too, but it hasn't been confirmed yet.

The first things that' are necessary for this fanfilm, are storyboard artists and voice actors - English ones first. I may voice Hugo for this film (like I'm voicing him for Agent Hugo LA) and maybe Matt as well, depending on do we use general voices or fanvoices?

But in case there are animators in this forum:
- The result should be the frame-to-frame animated cartoon. No rigged one, nor an anime.
- Recommended tools are Flash CS3 Professional, Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Image Ready. Recommended file format is .fla, so the animation can be modified in need or opened between different Flash animation softwares.
- Five options of how to animate: Rough animator (kind of unfinished, without enough frames, ink-paint or colors), ink-painter, colorist, frame adder (draws more frames between ones in rough animation) or all in one.
- Special/visual effect maker may also be necessary depending on where they're needed, including the scene where the title card gets assembled from snowflakes.

And in case there are background painters in this forum:
Three types of BGs are necessary: Normal, normal without sky (so the gradient can be added behind it) and cut outs.
The important is that they should be cartoonish (similar to those in "All-new Popeye Show/Hour", "Tom and Jerry kids show" or "Tiny Toons", rather than museum painting looking or something)

My suggestions of screen resolution are: 640x480 or 1484x480. My suggestion of maximum framespeed is 50 fps, making background scrolling look super-smooth. Let me know what do you think?

I'm getting better version of Hugo's model sheets finished soon. Next I'll upload my title card design for this film, some background sketches and model sheets for Hugolina and Matt. For Scylla, someone else may have to.

This is as far as I can tell and I'll tell more about music and sfx when it's necessary. Let me know what else you think of this?

Plus, can anyone help me with script's blue lines, please?

GWKTM
10-26-2014, 03:52 PM
There's a part in a script I haven’t come up with anything to, so could anyone please come up with what many things and/or trouble could happen during Hugo and Co.’s way to Scylla’s mountain by toboggan? Plus, if there are any Flash animators in this forum, could s/he co-animate for this film?

GWKTM
10-27-2014, 09:01 PM
I've now found voice actress to voice Hugolina, Trollerat, Trollerut and Scylla and received the lines required for the lip sync scenes (proper lip sync can't be done without the voice track, you know).

This fan film is still lacking the co-animators and bacground artists. I asked Egoraptor, HappyHarry and FiddleGriff, but they didn't reply yet.

Are there any flash-animators or background artists here in Hugo forums, please?

Why isn't anyone giving the helping hand? Am I the only animator in this forum, or are others just shy? Or just inactive or something?

Do you know any animators in this forum, or anywhere else like in YouTube or Newgrounds?

Could you also come up with what many things and trouble could happen to Hugo, Hugolina and Matt the elf during their way to Scylla's mountain by toboggan? Only idea I had is how it ends: They literally smack into wall of Scylla's mountain. "PAFF!!!"

How about those who made Hugo World? They used Flash. Could they co-animate for me?

I think it's now a good time to mention that if anyone has Hugo Saves Christmas and/or Hugo Wintergames 3 (where Santa is frozen), could s/he bring me the background musics of the game. They could make a good soundtrack for the film.

Hi GWKTM.

Have been following this thread since the start and I love the idea.
In terms of the artists working on Hugo World - these days they are working around the clock to have some very exciting things ready for all of you Hugo fans out there. You have all been asking for new games, so we listen ;)

Maybe another option could be to say, if the "first" option isn't possible - the flash animation, what could be a "second"?
Could that be your pixel art and perhaps less animation or more simple?

Making games is really a "ressources - dilemmas" game. Should we use 3D or 2D? Do we have the ressources? And if no, how do we get them?
There are many ideas that never end up in a game. So the interesting challenge is to come up with something within the ressources that are available - I wouldn't mind ending up seeing a Hugo pixelated retro Christmas thingy, with pixel snow falling from the winter night sky and everything ;)

Reason why I've been thinking it could be a flash animation is that few posts after this thread was started, someone mentioned about the fan film being traditional animation. I haven't thought of using pixel animation for this fanfilm. And you know, the Christmas is so close, that I hate to delay this to next year.

But sure, maybe someday I or we could begin planning pixel animated Hugo fanfilm. As for me, one pixel animated short that I'm planning to be included as bonus feature of Agent Hugo LA is Harlem Shake with Hugo and Co..

Oh, btw, about 3Ds, that's what I've been planning some of the fanfilm's backgrounds be.

I tried to find Hugo Wintergames download but only found one http://www.oldgamesfinder.com/?m=1&q=Hugo%20Winter%20Games%202 website which apparently has demo versions of Wintergames 1-3 which I'm gonna test soon.
----------
Edit: Ok I downloaded Wintergames #3 but there is only one audio track in the image which I can see and it´s the music which plays when you install the game.
781
There's also some sort of a file in the drivers
folder called cwbaudio but I can´t/dunno how to open it.
----------
I know one flash animator but he isn't interested unfortunately and I think that he's more like a pixel animator too.

Finally I have to ask if we will still see new Hugo Games this year? Hugo Troll Race 2 for Android/Windows Phone?

GWKTM

I've now done with Matt's model sheets:
783
Bigger version here:
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B0BfApzRjFV4cjhWZXJzR0prY1U/edit

My parents were using my computer when I started this image. That's why it's pencil drawn. The moods in bottom corner are drawn with Flash. They are just some basics, animators can come up with more moods in need. I haven't yet come up with how should Matt's clothes be colored.

Plus, there are collection of Scylla's modelsheets and concepts in GiantBomb, if anyone didn't realize yet:
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B0BfApzRjFV4cjhWZXJzR0prY1U/edit
But I'll assemble them to one package for each co-animator.

Hugolina's modelsheets coming soon. As well as the tiny animation sample of this fan film. I hope this rises your interest.

Few tips to ease animating: Animators could leave frames (or some of them) uncolored, so I or someone else could color them. Also, they could draw colorless background sketches (not finished BGs), so someone else could illustrate.

But guess what, there are few scenes in film with misc. trolls in it, so if anyone has Hugo World, could s/he bring me the files that contain misc trolls and their possible animations? That could ease up making such scenes.

GWKTM
11-20-2014, 08:44 PM
Here's the sample video of the film as far as I got it done:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0BfApzRjFV4RGxOSnU5b0JNRDQ/preview
If you don't see the video, then here's better link:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0BfApzRjFV4RGxOSnU5b0JNRDQ/view?usp=sharing

You see, there's a background sketch in a background as placeholder till the final background is done.

Few tips to ease animating: Animators could leave frames (or some of them) uncolored, so I or someone else could color them. Another thing that eases animating is that some of dialogues of this fanfilm can still dialogues, where only head moves a bit when speaking (similar to those in Hanna-Barbera's cartoons, as well as in Film Roman's, Plankton Studios' and Fredator's ones) and there's a way to generate automatic lipsync from the audio file in Flash. What it requires is a specific extension. Also, they could draw colorless background sketches like I did for that sample video, so someone else could replace them with proper bg illustrations.

But guess what, there are few scenes in film with misc. trolls in it, so if anyone has Hugo World, could s/he bring me the files that contain misc trolls and their possible animations? That could ease up making such scenes.

And last, does anyone please have any good ideas of what random things and trouble Hugo, Hugolina and Matt get into while sliding to Scylla's mountain by toboggan and in what order? What I came up is that they across the frozen pond, or river, go through bear's cave and crash into mountain's bottom.

That's really great and very funny!

Great idea with the cookies! Can't wait to see more!

A little behind the scenes:
In terms of Hugo World, the characters are animated in a little different way than just frame by frame.
It's a script controlling the various element of each troll, arms, legs, body, tail, head etc.

In Build A Troll, a fun feature in Hugo World where you can build your own custom trolls, has millions of millions of combinations, due to the trolls being divided into all the different elements.

Back in the days, sprite sheets with full frames would be loaded. That's not how it is being done in Hugo World.

Look forward seeing more GWKTM!

I sure knew that they were rigged piece assembled characters in Hugo World. Reason why I asked is because that they could be in background far behind closer characters, so it won't be noticed that they're rigged. Also, I may come up the way to use those body part pieces in frame by frame animation.

But probably not as simple, since Hugo World is a Commercial product....you know, copyright and all that.
Without suggesting too much, using some of the old stuff would probabaly make it easier.

More ways to ease up animating: One animator makes simple frames and another animator (one or multiple) draws more frames between them making it look smoother.

Plus the photos are also allowed for BGs. They can be found in Google or you can photograph yourself. You may need a good place, time and angle. BG sketches may help for start. Photos can also be edited with Photoshop or such.

And not only that. I found at least one pages where the BGs of real cartoons are archived/uploaded:

And another with winter photos (scroll page down to find more photos):

About the opening credits of this fanfilm - this is how far I got it planned.

A) Hugo games A/S presents a GWKTM production
B) GWKTM presents in association with Hugo Games A/S

"HUGO AND ENCHANTED ACORN"

For the audio book written by:
(anyone got information of this one?)
Printed in (anyone got information of this one?)

Adaptation:
Nikolaj Peters
Alex Grave
GWKTM

Produced by:
GWKTM

Based upon characters created by:
NIELS KROGH MORTENSEN & LARS KROGH MORTENSEN

Let me know what do you think. Plus I came up how the toboggan-part could begin:
Hugolina: "Hugo, I just remembered there's an ice sclupture fair opened nearby."
Matt: "So THAT explains the frozen slide under us."
Indeed, it's the spiral slide shaped ice sclupture that trio is sliding down by. When they reached the bottom...
Misc. troll: "NO TOBOGGANS ALLOWED!"
Can anyone come up what else could happen...

And not only that, there's a large community of animators we could try asking animators from. It's called Frederator Network. But we must HURRY! There's just few weeks left before Cristmas eve!

But despite that, merry Christmas!

Do not give up! Take this year to prepare the film with time and perfect as possible, be translated best to make copies (for further dissemination) to the main languages of Hugo as being English, of course Danish, Finnish, German, Spanish, etc. With a year we could ask for help from other comrades of the forum for anything you need including translations, just send us the original script in English and we do the rest.

I got the opening title scene of Hugo and enchanted acorn finished (without title card and credit texts), but when I export it to AVI and put AVI into Sony Vegas, Sony Vegas doesn't support it. Does anyone who has used Flash Professional, have idea what's wrong?

GWKTM
08-29-2015, 09:32 PM
Sorry for my inactivity lately. Anyway, Hugo and Enchanted acorn is succeeding slowly due to lack of animators. So far I got only one co-animator to help. I finished three pages of storyboard (the scenes that I don't finish by myself) and one of the scenes is just BGs away of being complete. The title sequence (which is quite simple though) doesn't need but just opening credits and title card. If anyone has the original Hugo og fortryllede agern-book, could s/he tell me its credits (usually written into book's first or last pages)?

Agent Hugo LA then, I've got all voice actors for it and they all submitted all lines that were left. At the moment, cutscenes are succeeding better than level assembly. Reassembly of motocycle- and sewer-levels are quite tricky, since I didn't manage to make any simple templates, which could be easy to modify without causing glitches.

Levels finished so far: 15/23
Cutscenes finished so far: 15

So far I have composed two music tracks for the fanfilm. First one is title theme which is a cover of Hugo Wintergames 1 tune. Second one is closing credits tune - at least primary version of it - which is glam metal remix of the outro song of Hugo og det fortryllede agern with little melody from Hugo er en skaermtrold added.

Maybe I should have made bigger announcement long time ago - or wait till I become enough popular in YouTube, or a paid artist, before announcing.

Instead, Agent Hugo LA is succeeding well and if I'm lucky, I can get it finished during December 2015

But seriously, am I the only animator in this forum?

Maybe you should contact the guy who made this weird turkish animation where Hugo appears https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4I92VdlPE8 [NSFW?]

Thankfully, some of the animators wanted to help me with fan film, but was just too busy. So whenever they have time to join during the next year, I could reopen the project.

Maybe you should delete my video from you FB page. It seems to be no use. It's still attracting comments that don't concern the fan film at all. Suggestions of non-Hugo-related FB pages, other non-Hugo-related adverts and one of the comments is about US attacking to Iraq. And still nothing about helping me with the fan film! What's goin' on in there? Do they even know what they're giving comments to?

Good news keep coming! I found few co-animators for Hugo and enchanted acorn. I still might need few more, but I also might have chance to get it finished till Christmas eve. We still have a lack of background artist (or speedpainter). If anyone here is willing to help, let me know

I also made a logo animation for this community in case this fanfilm becomes its presentation:

All it needs now is the link to this forum (and probably ones for FB page and YouTube channel), but let's see what do you think of this so far.

Agent Hugo LA is progressing well too:
7 cutscenes left to finish
Started 3/7
